Comparative utility of sero ascites albumin gradient and ascitic fluid total protein for differential diagnosis of ascites.

چکیده
Ascites can be defined as the abnormal accumulation of fluid inside the peritoneal cavity. Earlier ascites was classified as transudative and exudative based on the total protein concentration of the ascitic fluid. The traditional concept of high protein ascites(> 2.5 g/dl) as exudate was questioned because: (a) the normal peritoneal fluid protein concentration is some times > 4 g/dl(1); (b) the ascitic fluid protein concentration increases in cirrhotic patients with diuresis and albumin infusion^); (c) some transudative ascites like cardiac ascites have high protein concentration while some traditionally exudative ascites like malignant ascites have low concentration of protein(3); and (d) moreover cirrhosis may be the most frequent cause of high protein ascites(4).

Identifying high and low serum-ascites albumin gradient in ascitic fluid by the point of care dipstick test
Objective: To evaluate the capability of ascitic fluid dipstick results for pH, glucose, and protein in order to predict a low serum-ascites albumin gradient (SAAG) at the bedside of the patient in the emergency department (ED). Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted during one year in the ED of Afzalipour hospital in Kerman, Iran. ...

متن کاملRole of serum-ascites albumin gradient in differential diagnosis of ascites.
BACKGROUND The classification of ascites as 'exudative' and 'transudative' based on ascitic fluid total protein (AFTP) has been challenged in many clinical conditions like cardiac ascites, patients on prolonged diuretic therapy and malignant ascites because it had poor diagnostic efficacy. These drawbacks have led to the development of another approach to classify ascites, which is based on Ser...
متن کاملUsefulness of Serum Ascites Cholesterol Gradient (sacg), Total Protein (tp) Ratio and Serum Ascites Albumin Gradient (saag) in Differentiating Tuberculous Ascites and Cirrhotic Ascites
Background: Differential diagnosis of ascites is a common clinical problem and is usually done by Serum Ascites Albumin Gradient (SAAG).However many other markers can also be utilized for the same. Aims & Objective: This study was carried out to evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of ascitic fluid cholesterol, serum ascites albumin gradient (SAAG) , Total protein Ratio and serum ascites choleste...
